Plan the opening around the roof structure

A roof window can add useful daylight and ventilation, but its position must work with the room below and the roof above. We consider roof pitch, window size, intended room use and the relationship between the opening and existing rafters. Structural alterations may be needed where the selected size does not fit the available spacing. We also review access and the current slate or tile covering. Careful planning helps place the window where it serves the room without creating avoidable disruption to the roof structure or leaving the handle somewhere only a basketball player could enjoy.

Integrate the window with the roof covering

We form and support the opening, fit the Velux unit and use the correct flashing arrangement for the surrounding roof material. The junctions must direct water around and below the window without letting it reach the opening. We pay attention to drainage above the unit and make a neat connection with existing slates or tiles. Installation complexity can change with structural work, access, covering type and the amount of internal finishing required. We identify those factors during assessment so the roofing element and the room-side work can be planned in the right order.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Velux window fit between existing rafters?

That depends on the chosen window size and rafter spacing. Some units can fit between existing members, while larger openings may need planned structural alterations and additional support.

Which roof details affect the window position?

Pitch, rafters, covering type and external obstructions all matter. Inside, room layout and a practical operating height also influence where the unit should be placed.

How is a roof window kept watertight?

We use a flashing arrangement suited to the surrounding slates or tiles and form the junctions to direct water around the window. Drainage above the opening is also carefully managed.
